His formative years were spent mostly in Wichita, but being the son of an iron worker, the family made their home in various parts of the country encompassing twenty-four different states. On November 11, 1954 in Wichita, Kansas he was united in marriage to Donna Lenora Rainbolt and to this union three sons and two daughters were born. He had worked for both Boeing and Beach Aircraft in Wichita before starting his golfing career in 1970. In 1969 he moved his family from Wichita to Southwest, Missouri, living in Joplin and Lanagan before settling in Noel, Missouri.
